MEMORIAL PROJECT - ENDOWED tree for Joel
A mature White Ash ( Fraxinus americana ) in Central Park was endowed in late February 2024 in memory of Joel.
The specimen is approx. 50 ft tall and 27 inches in diameter. White Ash are a threatened species in North America due to the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer. The Central Park Conservancy takes great care with this rare specimen including treatments to prevent borer damage.
It is located just south of the Greywacke Arch along the East Drive.
GPS coordinates are 40°46'43.7"N 73°57'58.6"W
The endowment will cover the continued care and conservation of this tree along with a paving stone dedicated to Joel at the south end of the park’s Literary Walk & Mall.
The quote on the stone is from an ancient Egyptian prayer for a Pharaoh’s accent into the afterlife - as it appears in Philip Glass’ “Akhnaten” one of Joel’s favorite operas.
The stone is located on the north east side of the path encircling the Olmsted Flower Bed.
A memorial event was held in Central Park on May 26th 2024 - more information about the service is on the event page.
